Invisible in Plain Sight will be the first installment of Under New York City.
This segment focuses on the newsstand vendors spending long hours in the cramped kiosks on the subway platforms. The workers - nearly all immigrants from Bangladesh - are strangers in a strange land, isolated in their cluttered kiosks for long stretches while the city rushes past.
Do you ever wonder about them - how they got here, why they came here, what they've experienced? What is the city like from their perspective?
There used to be 5000 newsstands, now there are maybe 2000. Two newsstands have boarded up in the past month on the AC/BD platforms at Columbus Circle. Who's next?
It's time we get to know the newsstand vendors working underground. I will be documenting and interviewing them later this month.
